Does my car need ADAS calibration after windshield replacement?

If your windshield has a camera behind the rearview mirror, yes. Most vehicles built from roughly 2018 onward have one, and many earlier vehicles do too. Lane keep assist, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and traffic sign recognition all depend on that camera seeing through the glass at a precisely known angle. New glass changes the optical path, so the camera has to be re-taught.

What is the difference between static and dynamic calibration?

Static calibration places manufacturer-specified targets at precisely measured distances in front of the vehicle on level ground, and a scan tool walks the camera through recognizing them. Dynamic calibration requires driving the vehicle at a specified speed on well-marked roads while the tool monitors the camera learning. Some manufacturers require a static procedure followed by a dynamic verification drive.

What happens if I skip recalibration?

The systems will usually appear to work, which is what makes skipping it dangerous. A camera aimed a fraction of a degree off still reports lane position and following distance, just incorrectly. At highway speed a one-degree error translates into a meaningful misjudgment. Automatic emergency braking may initiate late, and lane centering may track off-center through curves.

Is the windshield really structural?

Yes. In a frontal collision the windshield backstops the passenger airbag so it deploys into position rather than out through the opening. In a rollover the windshield contributes a significant share of the roof's crush resistance. Both jobs require the urethane bond to be intact and fully cured, which is why safe drive-away time is not a formality.
