How the sensor works
A rain sensor emits infrared light into the windshield at an angle and measures how much reflects back. Dry glass reflects nearly all of it. Water on the outer surface changes the refraction and lets some escape, and the drop in returned signal tells the module how wet the glass is.
Why the gel pad matters
For that optical path to work, there can be no air gap between the sensor and the glass. A clear silicone gel pad fills the gap. The pad is a consumable: once it has been compressed and heat-cycled for years, it hardens and will not re-seat cleanly.
Reusing an old pad traps microscopic air bubbles that scatter the infrared signal. The symptom is wipers that trigger at random or refuse to trigger in real rain.
The fix is trivial if you do it upfront
